.......History of Apollo Golf Shafts......
Apollo has had a long and impressive history in the golf world. The company was started in England, over 150 years ago! In 1913, the original owners, Accles and Pollock, received a patent for the first tubular steel golf shaft. Then, in 1919, the company was purchased by Tube Investments (TI). It took awhile, but finally the R & A legalized the shaft for tournament play in 1927. It quickly replaced hickory golf shafts that had been used since golf was born in Scotland.
Accles and Pollock soon began a relationship with an American company, American Fork & Hoe (American Fork & Hoe eventually merged with 16 other implement makers to became True Temper, a well-known shaft manufacturer). As a licensee of the True Temper brand for close to 40 years, Accles and Pollock made shafts under the True Temper name for the European and Japanese golf markets. Then in 1977, they began selling their own Apollo branded shafts to the North American market, introducing the golf industry to brands such as Balistik, Matchflex, Acculite, AP44, SpectreLite, etc.
In 1986 the company was split to give more attention to the golf side of the business, and took on the name TI Apollo. Reaching yet another milestone, in 1988, TI Apollo was the FIRST steel shaft manufacturer to also offer its own branded graphite shaft models. In 2000, following a decline in the companies’ fortunes, True Temper purchased the assets of TI Apollo but interestingly, did not acquire the intellectual property, including brand names and patents. Christoper Lin, a successful Taiwanese entrepreneur with long time experience in the golf industry purchased Apollo’s intellectual property, later acquiring steel shaft manufacturing machines.
Apollo Golf re-emerged focusing first on manufacturing steel shafts mainly for the package golf set business but eventually developing an extensive and broad line of lightweight steel shafts. Today, Apollo offers the highest quality standard weight and light weight steel shafts, graphite shafts and putter shafts, at below market prices. Apollo shafts have or are being used in many prominent OEM golf clubs. Some of the more popular Apollo shafts are the Shadow, Hump (which has been played by Vjay Singh, Jim Furyk and many other PGA tour pros), Acculite75, Acculite85, Acculite95,, Masterflex, Balistik, Shadow, and many more! |
